With our series on sleep wrapping up, I’d love to finish with a gorgeous Spiced Goji Berry Hot Chocolate recipe. Mentioned in last weeks Eat These 3 Foods Before Bed for a Better Nights Sleep, this evening winter warmer has a secret (or now not so secret) ingredient. Goji berries are packed full of vitamin B2, copper and melatonin, which could help you to drift off quicker at bed time. Moreover, because the melatonin in goji berries is naturally occurring, they lack the potent amnesia-inducing effects of many over the counter sleep aids, which can cause drowsiness the next morning.
I used the Goji Berry Powder by OMG Organics (not affiliated) in this recipe because of its smooth texture and mild taste. If you don’t have access to a goji berry powder, you can also use regular goji berries and blend the ingredients in a NutriBullet before heating them on the stove. Or, pop them in the pan and let them float to the top of your hot chocolate like little goji berry marshmallows.
Did You Know: Indigenous to the Himalayan mountain region of Tibet and China, goji berries (also known as wolfberries) get their vibrant red colour from zeaxanthin, a physochemical that is known to help protect the eyes from damage by free radicals.
