I love the sugar scrubs you see in department stores and spas… the problem is, they can cost a lot of money, especially when they’re so easy to make at home. As we are still amid the chilling Canberra winter, I decided to make a Blood Orange, Thyme & Ginger Sugar Scrub. The sweet, tangy scent of blood oranges is enveloped by the rich, warming aroma of fresh ginger for a luxurious winter body scrub that both buffs the skin to eliminate impurities and retains moisture balance.
I use it on my face, body, feet, and lips for gentle exfoliation. The best part about sugar scrubs is that not only are they affordable to make, but they also take just minutes to whip up from ingredients that are probably already in your kitchen. I’ve used organic raw cane sugar in this recipe as it polishes the surface of the skin, priming it for anti-oxidant rich coconut oil to seep in and seal moisture. This recipe leaves no residual greasiness, just glowing skin.
Blood Orange & Thyme Sugar Scrub:
- 500g organic raw cane sugar
- 2 tbsp Pacific Organic Virgin Coconut Oil
- Juice from half a blood orange
- Pinch of fresh thyme leaves
- 1 tsp of grated ginger
Warm the coconut oil in a pan until it’s a liquid consistency then mix in the sugar, the skin and juice of half a blood orange, a few sprigs of thyme and the freshly grated ginger. Don’t worry if some of the pulp comes with the blood orange, it adds to the texture. Remove the blood orange skin and spoon into jars adding a few leaves to the top of the scrub. Store in the fridge for 2-3 weeks or until all is used up.
